Dear Clubs,

After ongoing discussions with AFL NSW/ACT, AFL Canberra has successfully secured the opportunity to compete in the Blacktown International Sports Park State Representative Carnival on Sunday 10^th June 2012 (Queen’s Birthday Weekend). This is a unique opportunity to compete alongside representative teams from leagues all over NSW. AFL Canberra will be entering an ACT Representative team made up of Division 1, 2 and 3 players (NEAFL Players are ineligible). The carnival will feature head to head matches between leagues from around the state and territory with the ACT scheduled to play against the AFL NSW/ACT Indigenous All Stars team.

It is critical that we support this carnival as a state league as this will serve as the selection day for the combined NSW/ACT State Representative team that will compete in the Australian Country Football Championships in Wagga Wagga from 19^th-22^nd July 2012. Only those players competing in Blacktown will be eligible for selection to the State team. In the interest of seeing a strong contingent of ACT players included in the state team, AFL Canberra will be looking to assemble a strong ACT rep side to compete in Blacktown.

Further information will be sent at a later date. Expression of interest for coach’s from a Div 1, and assistant coach’s from a Div 2 and 3 sides. Also clubs will be asked to nominate players who may be interested in playing, will be sent out as well

Pre-Season Training Info

Thanks to the 25 or so blokes who came to the Blues opening training on Wednesday night - it was an excellent session, well run by Luke Barrett.

We are hoping for similar numbers again next Tuesday so we encourage all that attended to come along again and feel free to bring your mates.

Training moves to Tuesday night next week at 6pm at Forestry Oval, then goes two days per week after that being Tuesday / Thursday at 6pm. I am hoping we'll have another 5 or more new faces next Tuesday, as we'd like to have 32 guys committed to play by the end of the month. We used 40+ players last year, so numbers is always an issue.

We will look to have a combined training with the Cooma Cats later in the month on either a Tuesday or Thursday - this date is to be determined.

The Blues Committee in 2012 has been working pretty hard, and are developing a full schedule for the Preseason including a couple of functions for the boys to get together and have a pre-season 'bond'....

At this stage, the club is planning a team meal/Club Meeting at the Irish Club on around the 7th of February after training, a Punters Club afternoon mid Feb, a trial game at Batemans Bay in March, and the Cooma Carnival on 31st of March. We are also planning a huge function around 5th of May.

The season starts on 14th of April, so we have a few months to get fit, get run into the legs and get organised for 2012.

Blues name interim coach

The Committee of the Woden Blues is happy to announce that former player and Cooma Assistant Luke Barrett will be taking control of early season trainings in his role as Interim Coach.

Luke is a qualified coach and has been assistant to Azzo for the last two seasons at the Cats. Luke has 20+ years of football experience and will bring a new vibe and enthusiasm to training.

His first session in change is next Wednesday at Forestry Oval, starting at 6pm.

All players, prospective players and former players are encouraged to attend.

Welcome back all to the 2012 season. I hope your Christmas was enjoyable, relaxed, and we all kept in shape with 10k road runs every day to keep off the Christmas cheer...

The Woden Blues 2012 campaign starts on Wednesday 18 January at Forestry Oval, Yarralumla. Training starts at 6pm for about an hour and a half.

I am still working on a coach for the season, and hope to have some news by the end of next week.

I encourage everyone to come along to training, get fit, enjoy yourself and run off the Christmas kilos. I hope every returning player can also bring one other person along, so we can train with 30 people and make the session worth its while.

Training for January will be one night a week on the 18^th and 25^th Jan from 6pm, then go two nights a week after that.

Woden Blues AFC Football Clubs Seeks Senior Coach and Assistant Coach for the 2012 season

The Woden Blues AFC, who have recently been promoted to Division 2 of AFL Canberra are seeking the services of a Senior and Assistant Coach for the 2012 season.

This is an exciting opportunity to be involved with an up and coming club that has achieved success within its 16 year history.

The Woden Blues AFC has a strong following and also possesses a united committee with full support moving to 2012. It is currently affiliated with the Cooma Cats Division 4 Club.

We welcome all applications for the above coaching roles, both within a playing or non -playing capacity.

The Club will pay for training and accreditation to Level 1 Senior or an upgrade to Level 2 for a previously accredited Coach.

The Blues AGM has been run and won, and congrats to those now on the Committee.

Welcome to new Committee members Corey, Lawny, Junior (returning), and the Blues are glad to announce the formation of a Social committee, headed by Vis, with Jase Gunny and Carts involved.

Thanks to Life Member Wayno for 15 years service to the Blues - he has stepped aside but will still be involved in some way in 2012.

Thanks also to Simon Crooks and Paul Short who have stepped aside.

The new Committee has begun a process of seeking a coach and new players for 2012.

Off Season Blues

It may be off season, but the Off Season Blues are out and about in the Sunday Cricket League and the AFL 9's Rec Footy Comps.

The Blues Rec Footy team won their first two games easily, but suffered a washout then forfeited their fourth game. The 5th saw the team cop a towelling from Balls Deep, but the OB's are hoping t turn it around next Tuesday at Phillip.

The cricket boys are 3 games in, with a couple of wins under the belt. Spence has dominated with the bat, and The Pearl returned from WA to dominate last week.

2nd start and in reasonable form. Last start went too hard to early and faded towards the finish. Up in the weights and has been out to stud for the past 12 Months.This distance preferred and will be thereabouts. Place hope.

Joshua Veliscek

Has run a few races this trip without a placing, but may find this field easier going. Blinkers are off and has good trial form. Trifectas.

Sean Nihill

Old stayer who is attempting his 10th race start at this trip. Was competitive earlier in his career but has drifted back to the filed in recent starts. Blinkers on, but is proven at this distance. Watch betting.

Troy Loughnan

3rd start and in good form. Struggles to back up on Saturday’s and distance will be a query. Will be there from the start and has every chance of hanging on in a shorter than usual race. Go close.

Ashley Carter

9th start and a solid campaigner. Has the blinkers on and has been in strong form throughout the winter. Previous place getter and is a big chance in a small field. If the West Coast get up, he may have the legs to get home in a close one. The testing material.

Brett Stabb

4th start at the trip and is a good bolter, especially if the pies get up on Friday night. Distance a query and may struggle to keep up with the field despite a good trial on Silly Sunday. Feel the extra distance may hurt. Prefer others.

Paul Fry

Seasoned campaigner who is always in the mix, but a recent injury may hamper his efforts this run. Put in a solid performance last start, but will struggle to keep with the leaders this distance. Prefer to see.

Luke Hall

Top Weight. Slow start to the season but surprisingly placed his last start on Silly Sunday. Distance seems to be his preference. Goggles on, and looks to have a few covered this trip from a good barrier. Multiples.

Simon Visser

13th start and most experienced runner in the field. Blinkers are off for the first time in 3 years and poses a threat. The shorter distance may worry but will be there at the finish. Top hope.

Dean Brittain

3rd start after a long spell and has been at stud. Blinkers well and truly on, and may struggle first up. Will be thereabouts at the turn but will struggle to go with them. Others stronger.

Steven Lawn

Good trial form. Is always in the finish but yet to crack it for his maiden win. Likes to ride midfield, knows the track well, and will wait for an opening before going hard ; ) One of the chances.

Ryan Kearney

Blinkers are off, but struggled at the distance last start and has been unsighted in major trials since. Shorter distance this trip may help, but will need luck. Glue factory.

James Smith

Young colt at his 2nd start this trip. Went hard last start before failing in the final straight. This shorter distance may suit better and could in the finish. Experience from last year could help. Each way.

Luke Barrett

Up in the weights and blinkers on for the first time. Slow starter who may come good depending on the result of the Eagles v Cats match. Will have to hope for a fast pace and try to come home hard. Needs luck.

John Chick

Oldest horse in the race at his 5th start this trip. Ran in the top 5 last start and this shorter distance may suit. Knows the track well and has been warming to this race. Trifectas.

Heath McRae

8th start this trip and is a seasoned campaigner. Has the blinkers on but has shown good trial form. Placed at this track previously and always shows a good sight at the finish. One of the chances.

Plans for Silly Sunday are now final

The Plan

Meet at the Kambah Tavern from 11am. The tavern is better than most rumours would have you believe and has a couple of pool tables, juke-box, ACTTAB facilities, and some old fashioned cardies. They will also have the Swans v Saints match on from 1pm and we are guaranteed to be allowed in dressed-up and wont be kicked out. Anybody not happy with the venue should direct their displeasure towards Alty.

After the Swans v Saints match (about 3.30pm) we will maxi-cab it to the Irish for cheap beers, the band, Pokie fix - for those that need it -, and the joker jackpot, followed by dinner.

After that is anyones guess..........

BLUES GO DOWN TO EASTLAKE BY 11 POINTS

The Blues have gone down to Eastlake at footy park despite dominating the 1st and last quarters. It was in the middle of the game where the run stopped, concentration lapsed and the Blues were outscored 10 goals to 4. The Blues came home with 5 last quarter goals, but the damage had been done and Eastlake ran out eventual 11 point winners.

The near-by Canberra hospital copped a work out with an Eastlake player suffering a broken arm, Nato tearing his knee cap off the bone requiring surgery, and Frenchy braking his leg.

This week is the final match for the Blues in the 2011 season. It is against the Jets at 2pm at Footy Park, Phillip on Saturday. Hope to see everyone there for the game and back at the Irish Club after the game.

After a few tough weeks both on and off the field, it was great to see us give the Belco boys a real scare today.

There were a few Willi awards given out today for great games over the past couple and solid efforts at training and around the club:

Chris Chivers who has been a regular at training over the past couple of weeks. After his 1 touch game last week, he tripled his possessions this week. Well done Chiv!

Junior Maher who has been rock solid this year and a great club leader.

Viss who is stringing some games together and looking fantastic up forward.

Big Lukey, who has trained hard all year and has been an awesome clubman.

Ryno, who played his heart out today and always give 100%.

The mighty Blues took on ADFA, with a bits and pieces side missing plenty not expected to do much, even by our own players and supporters.

However, everyone got a huge surprise when the boys showed heart, courage, passion and skill before being over run in the second half

The match was fast and furious for the first quarter, with both teams working to their best. The Blues ran with the wind, with the forwards taking their chances and the backs rebounded attack after attack. The Blues took a tiny lead into the first break, and cmae out firing in the second.

Googs was enjoying his return to footy after a month off, and Cabbie was finding space and working hard. Vis was a great target up forward, whilst the midfield of Steamer, Starkey, Dicko and Stabby were dominating the midfield.

The boys kicked 5 goals straight and looked to have Belco on the ropes before the Magpies showed their typical courage and determination to fight back to get within a kick at the long break.

The third quarter saw the Blues fight hard, but Belco took the most of their chances and opened up a two goal lead at the final break.

Woden scored early, but Belco bounced back and the margin became insurmountable.

It was yet another 'honourable' defeat. The boys have suffered too many of them this year, and its about time for a win

Woden take on ANU at Uni oval this Saturday. The boys have only won once there, so it will be a big challenge but one we are confident in, with up to 4 of our best team due back....

This year could see a couple of different teams make the preliminary finals with Carlton, West Coast, Sydney and even Freo a chance to make their first appearance at a Woden Blues EOST! Over the years the boys have watched the Pies, Cats, Bulldogs, Saints, Lions, Crows, Bombers, and the Hawks fight it out to make the AFL GF. Is your team a chance of joining us on the EOST this year?

As usual we will also be trying our luck at the Caulfield Races, and hitting the town hard in what is always the best weekend of the year.

Weekend Preview

After an extremely spirited effort in the mountains against ADFA last weekend, the Blues return to Canberra to take on Ainslie at the lush Ainslie Oval on Sunday at 2:15.

Despite missing plenty, the Woden boys showed spirit, heart, courage, teamwork and many of the ingredients that had been missing at times this year to go down by 80 points or so. A huge effort by Altie, Corey, Starkey and Eckers who played midfield unchanged - and a big thanks to Gratty, Corey, Mal and Shirvo for filling in for us.

This weekend hopefully sees the Blues get 22 players this week - with Stabby, Steamer, Jase, Chivers, Visssss and maybe one or two others due back. The boys lose Jimmy and Lawny, but should have a competitive team against a side they have never lost to.

Game starts at 2:15.

NOTE: Next weeks game has been changed to Jamison Oval (from Kippax) on Sunday 31 July.

Gallant Blues beaten by ADFA

A gallant Blues wore the defeat expected by most, but the 80 point final margin was probably a lot closer than expected...

Woden headed up to play the double header at Cooma, and were greeted with an overcast day at the SMO.

Struggling to fill a team, the Blues had a number of Cooma boys fill in, with Mal and Corey proving themselves easily capable in the higher division as the game progressed.

The Blues were running into the wind in the first term, and trailed by 4 goals at the first break. Woden had a few chances but were unable to capitalise, but the boys were pleased with their efforts at the first break. The second term started and Woden kicked 2 goals straight away - it was game back on.

ADFA clicked out of third gear and kicked 3 goals late in the term, but the boys were about 7 goals down at the main break. Starring for the Blues was Starkey and Corey playing midfield without rest, Eckers in the centre, Carts down back, Gunny playing arguably his best ever game and Al who was finding space and proving a critical link.

The final result was about 80 points, but considering the number and quality of the guys missing, it was a honourable effort and one where everyone who pulled on a blue jumper should be proud of.

The Blues play Ainslie next week, and hope to get up to 6 players back in - on the assumption they can train and can dislodge the guys who did the trip up the highway and backed it up with brilliant team spirit.

Blues Support Women in Footy!

The Blues head to Cooma this weekend to host ADFA at Snowy Oval, and will be using the Women in Footy pink ball in this weeks game.

The ball will be auctioned off at Dodds Hotel after the game, with the proceeds going to the Jane McGrath Foundation.

The Cooma Cats will aslo be auctioning off a ball, and proceeds from the Cats Casino night will also be going towards the McGrath Foundation.

On paper, it was 8th versus 9th, a chance for each team to record an all too rare win. In reality, it was one way traffic as the Blues recorded their 4th win of 2011, thumping the Tuggeranong Hawks at Footy Park.

Highlight for the day was big Schicken, kicking ten in a dominant display up forward. He was supported by Starkey with three or four, and Viss a similar number (despite some 'memorable' attempts).

The Blues played some entertaining football, and ended up winning by around 20 goals. Best for the Blues was Schicken, Azza at CHB, Stabby in the ruck, Lawny on the wing, Corey all over the ground and Frenchy down back.
There were two obvious highlights for goal of the day. The first was a brilliant bit of team play, where Carts collected the ball in his defensive goal square, had 5 bounces and spotted up a target in the middle. The ball then was quickly moved to the forward line where Jimmy Mac crumbed the pack and slotted the goal.

The second was a touch of redemption for Vis, who had suffered the kicking yips - he resolved these with a sensational left foot snap from the dead pocket for a miracle goal.

The Blues host ADFA at Snowy Mountains Oval on Saturday - start will probably be brought forward to 2pm.

Weekend Review/Preview

The Blues took on traditional rivals Murrumbidgee last weekend at Footy Park. In a tough and hard fought game, the bits and pieces Blues were rolled by the Juggernauts by 40 points.

The Blues started quickly but were over run in the first term as the reality of too many injuries and sore bodies coming into the game struck.

Murrumbidgee couldn't miss for a while and the Blues fell out of contention. A spirited last term by the Blues was enough to reduce the margin back to 40 points, but it was a side well beaten.

Cooma road trip news

This Saturday the Blues have an away double header against Tuggeranong at Footy Park, where the Cats take on the Hawks at 12.

Next weekend, the Blues travel to Cooma to host ADFA at Snowy Mountains Oval. It is Pink Footy Day, and all wives/girlfriends will get a free champagne from the Cats. To assist with catering, they need to know numbers of which women of footy will attend ASAP.

That night the Cats have their annual Casino night. Its always a great night and Tickets are $30 each. Dress is Western - with prizes for best dressed. TICKETS MUST BE PRE-PURCHASED.

There is limited accommodation at Dodds Hotel, and we have booked 12 bunk beds in basic 2 camp bunks per room accommodation. However, if we don't have 12 planning on staying, I need to let Shirvo know by tomorrow to cancel a booking of 4 to free up rooms for him.

Cooma Road Trip - Sat 16th July

The Blues have the annual home game at Cooma - and that night is the Cats casino night.

The theme this year is Western - get your Stetson, your spurs and your chaps...

I strongly recommend EVERYONE do their best to stay overnight and attend. Its a cracker of a night. The Casino night is great for a you and your missus, and there is cheap (but very basic) accommodation available at Dodds Hotel at the right price.

The Blues vs ADFA and Cooma vs ADFA games are also Pink Footy rounds, with the match balls to be auctioned off post game.

A depleted Blues took on Harman, and it was an unfortunate result.

However, in so far as 20 goal losses go, it was a long way from the worst the boys have been involved in.

The first five minutes was some of the hardest footy of the year, with the ball going end to end without score. When it trickled over the sideline for a boundary throw, 36 players sucked in the big ones. Harman got it together and kicked 6 quick goals as the Blues lost Schicken and Googs to injury.

The Blues fought back, with Campbo kicking a good goal from 50 and Shicken snuck one in from a pocket to bring the margin to 4 goals.

The floodgates opened a little in the 2nd, but Woden kept running. Great efforts from Junior and Frenchy at the back, and Eckers in the guts kpet the Blues in the game.

The BLues ran with the Hogs for the first 18 minutes of the third term before two goals in 30 seconds saw the Blues lose the quarter.

A massive injury list that grew during the game saw the Blues run out of legs and the final margin become too many.

Club favourite French dog has kicked his first goal as a Woden Blues player, nervously playing on and reverse curling a drop punt just past the left post from 10m out on a slight angle!

Players rushed from as far as the back pocket to congratulate, maul, and mess up his famous blow-dried full head of hair.

Congratulatory calls and texts flowed in throughout the evening from fellow backs including Rowdy, Paul Nihill, Steven Silvagni, and Gary Pert.

Thanks solely to Frenchy's crucial goal in the third quarter, the Blues went on to defeat Gungahlin by 78 points.

G'day all

After a couple of weeks off, the Blues are roaring and ready to take on the Gungahlin Jets at Amaroo on Sunday at 2:15.

The Blues have lost a number of players, with young stars Joey and Smitty gone OS, and veteran clubman and committee member Nick moving to Perth for work. Lawny is stuck in Queenstown and Chivers is on a mission from God.

This has allowed two of our best and hardest trainers a crack at a spot this week, with Jerry and Webbie making the 22. Their persistence has seen them rewarded with their chance to shine and will be receiving great encouragement from the remainder of the team.

Veteran Vis is back from his magical mystery tour and a few oldies may again be called out of retirement.

We will need volunteers to run/walk water this week, so if you are out injured, come along and offer a hand to the boys. We will need your support.

Blues Run out of Gas

A brave Blues took on ANU last weekend, and after leading all day, Dad's Army ran out of gas to go down by less than 2 goals.

The outs were huge with Lawny (ankle), Carts (leg), Fred (groin), Vellie (ankle) Eckers (back) Joey (flu) and Jase (work) all missing, and the ins were old. Into the Blues came the spritely Gunny and the over 40's in Dicko and Eggo, and the late 30's group of Spence, Platty, Ryno and Budge out of retirement.

The Blues started well and lead the first quarter by a point. Schicken was proving a big target up forward and kicking goals, and down back Frenchy, Stabby and Jimmy Smith were defending resolutely.

The midfield of geriatrics kept winning the clearances, and the Blues opened a 17 point lead at the long break.

ANU came out firing and kicked a goal within 30 seconds of the bounce to get back in the game. Each time the students kicked one, the Blues fought back with a goal of their own to hold an 11 point lead at the last break.

The Blues had lost Frenchy to a split head, then Googs to a cut eye, and the old legs were tiring. ANU got a run on with three quick goals and took the lead, and the Blues were unable to get it back.

It was an honourable effort, but still a loss and a disappointing one at that. The boys have plenty to work with though and are optimistic to be able to cause an upset this weekend - depending on the ever expanding casualty ward...

Belco Thumps Blues

It was 'Thanks to the Umps' Round in AFL last week, but even the guys in orange and green would have been anable to save the Blues from a thumping at the hands of Belconnen.

The Blues got out of the blocks to kick the first three goals of the game, and holding the Magpies goal less for the term. The Blues used the breeze to effect and looked a million bucks.
The Magpies came out all fired up in the second, kicking 4 in 4 minutes and the Blues were gawn. Then the injuries started, with Freddie, Carts, Eckers and Lawny all suffering potentially long term injuries by the end of the game.

The Blues mounted a short fightback in the third, but a goal against the run of play to Belconnen stopped that in its tracks.

In the end, it was a courageous effort from Woden but one where they fell ten goals short.

Despite being 8th on the ladder, Woden are just one game and a bazillion percentage out of the 4. This weekends match against ANU will be tough with the huge list of outs, but the Blues will try to take their chances and see if an upset can occur...

The first clip is our recently completed TV commercial that will run weekly on Southern Cross Ten/One HD/Channel 11 highlighting the new NEAFL competition. This ad was shown a number of times on the big screen at the Western Bulldogs v Sydney Swans game on Saturday at Manuka.

Umpire Appreciation Round - A message from the League

This weekend recognises one of the most important events on the football match day Calendar. This weekend is Thanks Ump Round.

This is a nationally adopted weekend that recognises and thanks the umpires in our game across all grades from the AFL to community footy and ties in with the Umpiring Is Everyone’s Business Campaign (image attached).

This weekend for Thanks Ump Round, AFL Canberra, its clubs, players and officials are asked to adopt the following on match day as well as creating a positive match day environment for our umpires

Thanks Ump Round – What we will be doing on match day.
• All named players, coaches and officials to wear “GREEN” armbands a united show of support to umpires in the region.
• All grades line up in front of interchange area 5 mins prior to commencement of the matches played where a League or club representative will acknowledge umpiring and it’s contribution to the game, highlighting their clubs match day environment and what they want to achieve.
• Umpires to split and move down team line and shake hands with all the players and coaches (half the umpires go to one team on one side while the other half go to the other team, no need to double back)

AFL Canberra will provide clubs with green electrical tape for the arm bands

Teams would need to be in line up position 5 mins prior to schedule start time, where games at lower levels don’t have the time between maybe the game just completed can line up with the game about to commence!

The Mongrel Punter has put together a match report from the weekend

Woden and Ainslie made the trip to Greenway for Friday night footy, possibly the most anticipated night of football on the Woden calendar. In two previous attempts the Blues had come close but failed to bring home the four points, was Friday to be the case of third time lucky?

The first of the Blues started arriving at the ground at 5:30 and were quite surprised to see a fully kitted out Ainslie side already doing warm-ups on the ground, the boys were questioning the Tri-Colours enthusiasm only to find out a little bit later that somebody forgot to tell them that the game was put back by half an hour ...

It was clear to see the Blues turned up to play as in a rarity for the team everyone was on or very close to being at the ground on time. The feeling amongst the camp was great, the boys were raring to put on a show under the lights. It was also a good to see the return of Googs after a lengthy outing of suspension combined with a small case of old man syndrome.

The first quarter as it has been in all games this year was a hard fought affair, the ball moved quickly into each forward line and the slight lead the Blues had at the end of the first quarter came down to the great effort of their very consistent backline, it would be unfair to mention individuals as the backline as a whole did a magnificent job. Ainslie went into their forward line two more times than Woden but found themselves in arrears by two goals at the first change.

Second quarter was almost a mirror image of the first with one major difference in favour of Woden, that difference being their hardness at the ball as it didn’t take long for them to work out if they went hard they would win the ball. With the end result of winning the contested footy being free movement of the ball and excellent delivery into a strong forward line led by the fearsome presence of Eckers. The scores that Ainslie managed to get came through a couple of skill errors and dropped marks from Woden but on a slippery night it is not something the boys should stew on. After a quick melee and a couple of ripped shirts the Blues went into the main break with a four goal buffer.

As is usually the case with Woden a couple of good quarters is ultimately followed up by a drop in intensity and I guess a bit of a Nanna napping on the ground. Woden were still winning the contested footy through being much harder at the ball but lost all of their run and carry and were lucky that due to inaccurate kicking by Ainslie to go into the third quarter break up by less than a goal.

During the third term huddle in a super act by the senior players, an act that should be repeated again and again, rarely seen in a Blues jumper they pulled the team together and proved that leadership, voice and a bit of pride in your mates and the number on your back can go a long way. After some positive talk and rallying, the boys went out into the final term with heads up and nothing besides the Sherrin on their minds as the senior group lead by Starkey, Steamer, Junior and Carts did everything that we have always talked about doing but never managed to do, the heads were over the ball, positive talk around the ground and pushing through sore bodies and a bit of fatigue made for some entertaining footy.

Woden found the run that was lost in the third quarter and committed themselves to every contest both on the ground and in the air. The harder they hit the ball the more a younger Ainslie side backed off and by the final siren the Blues were full of run and enthusiasm.

Just a 30 second match report before the Players perspective to come next week.

The Woden Blues finally broke their Friday Night Footy hoodoo, recording a good win over the Ainslie Tricolours at Greenway on Friday Night.

The Blues lead all night, and ran away in the final quarter to run out something like 6 goal winners.

Best for the Blues were Joey, 150 Game Milestone legend Junior, Eckers with 6 up front, Stabby down back and Steamer and Starkey in the middle.

All in all it was a very good team performance, with an improved attitude and feeling around after the game.

Next weeks match is against the high flying Belconnen Magpies at Football Park on Saturday - a litmus test of where the Blues are at as we face another Top 4 team.

Friday night is a great night for football, and it will be again tomorrow as Woden take on Ainslie at Greenway.

The Blues have played two home and away games under lights on a Friday in the past and have failed to record a win, so the boys are hoping to change history and rack up victory number 1 under lights.

The match will start at 6:30, not 6pm as initially advised.

The team will be named after Thursday nights training.

The Blues made the journey to the home of all things Skype on Sunday.

Where to start this story, or more pertinent where to end it, unfortunately the story cannot be concluded 5 minutes into the second quarter no matter how much we want it to be. Just think Matty Primus addressing the media post Port Adelaide’s loss to the Gold Coast and that pretty much is all that needs to be said, however in fairness to those who were fortunate enough to be too busy to make it to the ADFA sandbar please continue on reading.

A beautiful , sunny, windless, picturesque Canberra day presented itself for the ADFA vs Woden clash, conditions which every blue would have been happy to see as everything besides maybe a little bit of heat suited the Blues and should have been conducive to our game plan. The first 20 minutes of the first quarter was a tight hard fought affair, ADFA challenged and Woden responded, Woden challenged and ADFA responded, no-one was on top, the midfields, backs and forwards from both teams were put through their paces and forced to work for every possession, with not an easy kick to be had by either time. A few good passages of play from the boys ended in goals to first gamer Eckers, and other good passages unfortunately went unrewarded with the ball just skewing either side of the posts. ADFA took ascendency in the last five minutes of the quarter kicking three quick goals to go into the first break with an 18 point buffer.

The Blues came out with all cylinders firing in the second quarter, hard running and some good skills saw the boys kick the first two goals within 5 minutes of the opening siren to put the boys only a kick off the pace. THE END!

Unfortunately not, from here the battering began, it is hard to say what the reason for the sudden drop in intensity was, one could blame the heat, a younger fitter ADFA side, home ground advantage (HA!), poor skill execution but in reality the work ethic of Woden reflected the last hour in the office on a Friday evening, no one wants to be there and everyone is doing nothing but dreaming of the imminent tasty hops. ADFA piled on 6 unanswered goals, whilst Woden sat back and watched. There were little positives to come out of the last twenty minutes, the backline led by the tireless efforts of Jas and Frenchy worked hard but under the enormous weight of forward entries were hapless in their endeavour.

Quarters three and four will be rolled into one for the purpose of saving you readers from the indemnity of a train wreck. What can be said? The boys gave up, there was little bark in the bite, there was no hard or work in their attempts at hard work as they were outscored 13 goals to three in the second half to go down by 113 points. As with the second quarter not much can be said, the backline tried hard against a barrage, the forwards and midfielders didn’t do enough and weren’t willing to chase their opponents as they freely ran forward and got a major case of leather poisoning.

In conclusion a day that we should all forget, move on and look forward to redeeming ourselves against Ainslie on Friday night under the hallowed lights of Greenway. The final score ADFA 24.20.164 to Woden 7.9.51.

After a solid win against Tuggeranong, Woden were keen to start the roll and make it two in a row. The Blues headed to ADFA, and copped a hiding not seen at ADFA since the gang bang in delta block mid April. It wasn't pretty - but unfortunately this time it was legal...

The first ten minutes was some of the fastest football seen in Div 3 - but the Blues were not able to maintain the pace, and despite two goals to debutant Eckers, it was 5 goals to 2 at the first break.

The Blues came out in the second quarter... sort of. It was one way traffic as the Cadets ran over the Blues to open up a ten goal lead by the main break.

The Blues backline struggled under the constant bombardment, and the forwards just struggled with limited opportunity.

The second half was no better, with the Blues unable to pin back the lead of ADFA. The match ended up a 18 goal rout.

The last couple of minutes saw Stabby and some sniper sent to the bench for a 15 minute rest after the worlds pissweakest melee. If a report is lodged, we'll ask the ADFA boys for a copy of the video, as the game was surely skyped to all others on base...

Best for the Blues was Eckers with 6 goals, with Stabby, two Smitty's and George all looking good.

Thursdays training is cancelled.

Training will be at Stirling next Tuesday at 6:45. We are looking at getting up to 6 players back, so getting two nights on the paddock will be very important towards selections next week.

Thursday night will be back at Hughes at 6pm.

The Blues next game is on Sunday vs ADFA at ADFA. The Cooma Cats play against Belconnen at the Station Resort, Jindabyne at 1pm on Saturday. Anyone not selected for the Blues can put their hand up for the Cats, but with the good numbers we have at the moment, a few players may miss out this week.

With a gusty wind not favouring the tall blues side, a number of injuries, the last minute out of Lawny leaving three on the bench (however rectified by big Tones backing up from Cooma, Thanks!) and Freddy arriving late due to spending the whole morning on the toilet as a result of some bad curry was not the start to the day that the Blues were hoping.

However with Junior leading the team out, winning the toss to kick with the strong breeze and the feeling amongst the boys being really good we knew that we were up for the challenge.
With a strong wind advantage the first quarter was a one sided affair with Woden dominating the play. Altie, Steamer, Cabbie, Dicko and the rest of the boys through the centre of the ground won almost every centre clearance and stoppage. The ball was moved quickly to an open and functioning forward line where Stabsy, Carts and Aaron were proving a major headache for the young Hawks and at quarter time the boys had opened up a 5 goal lead which could have been much more had we kicked straight.

Kicking into a heavy breeze in the second quarter the boys put on a show in their best quarter of football for the year, once again led by the midfield brigade, supported by a straight kicking forward line and a miserly backline who let nothing through. The boys romped to an eight goal lead heading into the main break. The highlight of the quarter being the nimble work of “comeback kid” Platty to rove a heavy pack and kick truly for six points.

Once again inaccurate kicking was the highlight of the third, the Blues could have broken the backs of the young Hawks but instead of what should have been a 12+ goal lead at the final break they found themselves up by 10 goals, a fair lead but one that could been much greater. The Smith brothers, first-gamer Joely, Corey, Hayward, Carts and Velli all dominated their opponents throughout and continued to take the game on as the lactic acid in the Blues old legs started to build up.

Woden decided they had done enough coming into the final term and were feeling bad for the major drubbing they were giving a young Tuggeranong team so they decided to all but lie down and let the Hawks get a few courtesy goals, not unlike a big brother, hopefully the lost percentage won’t come back to haunt them when finals arrive.

A first win for new coach Altie with the final score being Woden 13.16.94 to Tuggeranong 9.10.64. Best players of the day were disco Stabbsy, tireless workers in Al Hayward and the Smith Brothers, first and hopefully not last gamer Joely and a couple of older heads in Carts, Velli and Frenchy.

All in all a good win by the boys and with players returning over the next few weeks competition for spots will heat up and hopefully the boys can get up a bit of momentum.

Blues Disappoint Against Juggers

The Woden Blues headed back to the old home on Sunday in an away game against the Murrumbidgee Juggernauts. The Blues had 5 changes with Junior, Lawny, Stabbzy, Cabbie and Kasper in, and Fred (suspended), Tits (injured), Joey (wedding), Timbo and the Rated R Superstar omitted.

The game started brightly for the Blues, who dominated possession and eventually capitalised. Despite dominating possession and field position, the Blues overused the ball and where tehy should have lead by 3 goals at the first break, were held level with the Juggernauts.

An improved quarter by the Blues saw the boys open a small lead at the long break, with Schicken kicking three for the half.

The Blues goaled first in the third quarter before a couple of decisions went against the boys, and the boys dropped their bundle.

It was one way traffic for 20 minutes as the Jugs piled on 7 unanswered goals. The Blues fought back at the start of the final term, with Vis snapping a miracle goal on his left, but it was too little too late as the Blues went down by 4 goals.

It was a solemn dressing room, and the boys know it was a poor effort. A good week on the paddock should assist the Blues as we host the Tuggeranong Hawks in a double header with the Cooma Cats at Football Park on Saturday.

Cooma vs Goulburn - 12 noon start. Woden vs Tuggeranong 2:15 start. We need a water runner this week as Budge is running the canteen, so put your hand up if you have time - the Blues need you!

Blues Downed in Season Opener

The Woden Blues opened their season on Saturday against the Harman Hogs. It was a new beginning for Woden with a new coach, new home group, plenty of new faces and a new opportunity for some older faces.

Coach Altie took the reigns for the first time for Premiership points, and was disappointed as a number of regulars were unable to play due to injury, illness, suspension, absence etc.

This allowed a number of debutants a chance to shine, with Jase, Corey, Al, Azzo and Tim all making club debuts, with Vellie, Fredalenko, Joey and the Superstar making returns to the club.

It was was hot at Football Park, with the breeze favouring the northern end to the Blues advantage. The match started disasterously, with ruckman Schicken injured in the second bounce, Vis cleaned up and sustaining a busted beak, Starkey copping a hit to the kidneys ending his day and Fredalenko given 15 minutes in the sin bin - all before quarter time.

Harman capitalised on the disorganisation of structure with the loss of the three key players to dominate the first quarter, kicking away to a 4 goal lead. The Blues needed quarter time to regroup, and the group looked around and stayed tight.

Altie began to dominate the centre hitouts, with Jase 'George' Lucas roving brilliantly. Tits was a human wrecking ball, bashing and crashing opponents everywhere (and occasionally himself). M Smith was great as a link, creating opportunities up the ground and intercepting Harman attacks, and Corey was providing plenty of run.

Vellie was great at fullback, stopping the dominating full forward, with Chiv and Al also performing admirably. Joey showed some smooth skills and excellent vision, as the Blues began to run and carry, and despite running into the wind maintained the half time margin to just 4 goals.

The second half saw Woden fight admirably, but the lack of bench and heat began to show as Harman ran away with the game.

The Blues are hoping to have at least 4 back next week, for the traditional clash against Murrumbidgee at Stirling on Sunday at 2:15. It should be a cracker!

Round 1 Preview

The 2011 Season Launch/Jumper Presentation night will be on Saturday March 26th at the Canberra Irish Club, after the Blues final trial game of 2011.

Due to another booking in the Function Room, it will not be the lavish affair of previous seasons, but an opportunity for all players and families to have an early meal then a half hour meeting from 7pm.

The half hour meeting will cover off many topics such as meeting and greeting our new sponsors, roles and responsibilities, a bit of history for the new guys and a chance to have a beer or two together before the season starts.

There is no entry charge, and wifes/girlfriends/families etc are encouraged to attend. Once the meeting is over, the Irish Club will have the AFL on one of the many tv's so its a chance to kick on and enjoy a beer with team mates if that is your choice...

Firstly, a big welcome to the new blokes - Corey, Chris, Webbie, Luke, Gerard and a few others I may have missed. I hope you are enjoying your time with the Blues.

The season is fast approaching, with round one just a month away.

The Blues schedule is now full, with the Cooma Carnival on Saturday the 19th of March, and a trial match against Tuggeranong on the 26th of March at Greenway (midday start).

The Cooma Carnival sees Woden take on Ainslie, Tathra, Belconnen, Tuggeranong and Cooma in a round robin event. First game will be around 9am (to be confirmed), and last game probably starting around 2 - with a final, worth a grand to the winners - after that.

Its a tournament we want to do well at, and a great chance to get a lot of game time and run in the legs early in the year. Don't miss it!

Blues Pre Season Starts Thursday!

The Woden Blues pre-season starts in less than a week on Thursday 27th of January, with training Tuesdays and Thursdays at Forestry Oval at 6pm. New Coach for 2011, Michael Altus, has promised a more structured approach to training with Thursdays to specifically concentrate on game drills and strategy. Cooma Cats boys located in Canberra will be training with the Blues this year, and expect the occasional drill to be run by Cooma Assistant Coach Luke Barrett.

Be ready to go at training at 6 - so get there at 5:45 for a 6pm start. Get your friends and mates and anyone you think might be interested in playing for the Blues down there - it would be great to see 25 to 30 blokes at Forestry for the first run of the year. There will also be the bonus of a Presidents Esky...

For those working in Govt offices, put the attachment up on your Intranet and see if we can recruit a few new faces that way.

At this stage, our first trial is at the Cooma Carnival on Saturday 19th of March, with the season proper starts on 2nd of April vs Harman at Football Park. A full draw will be distributed in the near future once its finalised, but we have around 4 or 5 double headers with the Cooma Cats.

The Blues AGM was held today.

Wayno has stepped aside after 5 years as President. He has performed an outstanding job guiding the Blues since taking over the reigns, and leaves the position with the club in a good position with strong playing numbers and a new and enthusiastic coaching team.

For those interested in the coaching positions for 2011, a coach has accepted the offer for 2011. A formal announcement will be made in the next couple of days, but I am sure the proposed candidate will be well respected and successful in his new role.

AGM

The Woden Blues are holding their AGM on Sunday 28 November 2010 at 4pm at the Canberra Irish Club Weston.

Nominations for spots on the Committee are now being called for, and will be requested to be sent to me in writing prior to the meeting. Send your nominations to Budge via email by Thursday 25 November.

We also appoint a Coach, Assistant Coach and a Manager. In 2011, we hope to have volunteers for the following roles: Canteen manager, strapper, first aid officer, ground manager, property steward.

As part of the Committee restructure for 2011, each position will be assigned a role with responsibilities. A list of most jobs that are completed every across the course of the season are at the bottom of this email.

Roles: President - Management of Woden Blues AFC.

Vice President - Day to day management of Woden Blues AFC.

Secretary - Day to Day management, General Correspondence and football operations (transfers, ground bookings etc)

Treasurer - Financial management, incorporation.

General Committee Members - Sponsorship coordinator, fundraising coordinator, general duties as required, and can officially fill the volunteer roles nominated above.

Blues Make All Australian Side

The National Masters AFL championships have just been run and won, and the mighty Woden Blues were represented by a number of players.

Coach Dolliver, Dicko, Rhyno and Platty all pulled on the ACT jumpers, and each performed admirably - so admirably that three were named All-Australian in their age groups.

Rhyno and Platty made 35's All Australian, and Dicko back up his 2010 players player with Over 40's All Australian selection!

Well done boys, I reckon you have another season for the Blues within you!

Presentation Night - Altie and Dicko the Big Winners!

Veterans Altie and Dicko were the big winners announced at a sold out and huge Presentation night on Saturday night.

The 2010 Woden Blues B&F was Michael Altus, from Glenn Dickerson and Alex Heyward.

Players player was won by Glenn Dickerson from Alex Heyward and Simon Visser.

Most consistant went to Chris Karchinsky, with best First Year Player taken out by Alex Heyward.

Clubman of the Year went to Glenn Fowler, with Simon Visser taking out leading goalkicker.

The supporters award went to a deserving Steve Lawn, with Paul Fry picking up the coaches award.

Wayne Bennett was bestowed the honour of becoming the 5th Life Member of the Blues.
